Genuine question

Posted by xristos - 3 weeks ago

I've been active on this site for years. Contributing to the list of games by trying to make my own games. I've released many so far. Most of them are not very good, so I understand that they never really got any awards like Frontpage or something like that.

But recently I released a complete game a game that many strategy game fans may enjoy. A game that even 4 players can play at the same time in the same match, also including 1 vs 1 game mode. But it didn't get any award while it successfully got 3.6 stars.

My question is, is there something specific a game must have to get those awards? It's a genuine question I'm not begging or anything and sorry if it seems like begging. But I've seen many games that got lower than 3.6 stars and got frontpage and stuff.

Thanks for reading. I want to say that I'm not only writing just for my game, it now happened to be my game but who knows how many other games receive good rating but never receive a frontpage or something similar to get some support.

Note: I am not saying this to blame anyone, it's just a question I have. I like this website and I will continue liking it.

It's down to the whims of the mods

Could you try it out and tell me your opinion?

This may just be my personal perspective, but if a game's presentation is not looking particularly polished, I will already bee less interested in it. Many aspiring game devs come here and release works that honestly have telltale signs of them "being lazy" before I even press play.

When I look at 'Angels And Heroes III' right now:
- "This game is optimized for Google Chrome [...]" As somebody not using that browser I am already not interested anymore. But for the sake of argument/demonstration, I'll continue.
- "Many settings to customize the experience!" That should be the headline for a list. But that is literally a statement that stands on its own. There are no examples provided.
- "If anyone wants to play this online you can try using Parsec [...]"not a fan of having to mess with 3rd party software.
- "[...] if anything wrong happens or any damages happen to your device I am not responsible [...]" You can probably already imagine what I am going to say here_ If you cannot recommend it, DON'T recommend it... The whole thing sounds like malware at this point.
- The one screenshot is a "nothing statement". I do not know any more about the nature of the game.
- "Angels And Heroes III" and the playlist imply that there are a part 1 and 2 - yet you do not even mention them with a sentence. Should the players play the other ones first, for a fuller experience? Is there connective lore? Is there a timeline? We just don't know.
- I see 2 redundant tags (that are already expressed by the category). The tag limit is 12, but you and 2 testers could only come up with one term that describe what the game is about.
- There is also no indication of what engine it runs on in the space below the tags. Not every game will run smoothly in every browser.
- The thumbnail-art also isn't very endearing to me - but this may be a completely personal bias.
- Lastly: You have had a team of 4 people for that game. Each of you attached their name to that product. And every one of you thought the presentation was fine as it was. I do not have much confidence in your team's abilities after seeing this. People who have become aware of your 'brand name' in the past (like Moderators, who hang out here all the time) might avoid it based on similar 'trust issues'. (Like people who will not buy games if they were published by EA, or Konami, etc. They just lost all confidence.)

Alright! Thanks for writing this! I will try my best to make it look more polished.

@xristos I guess you are talking about the angels and heroes one, It was too big for my screen and I didn't get the instructions.

How was it too big? Do you mean I should make it smaller resolution?

@xristos yes and make it narrower to lose the black bars at the side.

Could you recommend me a resolution?

@xristos From what I gather scratch resolution is 480x360 so double that to 960x720 and that's a reasonable size.

I finally found the time and headspace to have a look at your updated description for 'Angels And Heroes III'.

I am sorry for being so honest. If I was able to, I would just say "It looks better now. Good job." and move on.

- I think you did a good job describing the ins and outs of the 3rd party program 'Parsec'.
- You addressed that the game can be understood and enjoyed without having played the prequels, but the sentence reads as if it was just written to address my question/concern. It has nothing to 'flow into'.
- You removed the mention of it being "optimized for Google Chrome" - which only invites complaints (and low ratings) by people who the game will not run for - because they didn't know.

I'm cutting my feedback short here. Overall I get the impression that you mainly removed points I criticized, but did not 'understand' 'why' I criticized them. 'Me writing another list' will not help you.

You have played a lot of games on NG. You have seen their presentation and read their description. Think about what makes those presentations "good" in your eyes. At the end of the day, learning these things yourself will be far more beneficial to you than having me give you another set of pointers that you cannot figure out.

Alright. Thanks!
